South Africa is blessed with some of the highest irradiation levels in the world yet we are only in 35th position on installed Solar Water Heating (SWH) systems per inhabitant. 0.036% of South Africans had Solar Water Heating systems (IEA report "Solar Heat Worldwide" ) in 2007. This figure includes pool heating systems which were the majority of systems installed in South Africa in 2007.

Why were there not more SWH systems in South Africa given that we had the ideal climate for them?  The reason -  we had an in expensive and constant electricity supply and it would take in excess of 10 years to recoup your investment in a SWH system.

Times have changed - our electricity is no longer cheap and indications are that we can expect regular rolling "blackouts" , worse than we experienced in 2008!
