Hospitality Industries Underwriting Consultants (HIU) was established in 1998 as a joint venture between Allianz Insurance Company Ltd. and Lireas Holdings after identifying the scope and demand for structured asset protection and risk management solutions to all segments comprising the Hospitality Industry.

In 2001, following the withdrawal of Allianz from the South African insurance market, HIU and Lireas entered into a partnership with Santam Insurance Ltd. The partnership enjoyed great success until early 2004 when, as a result of strategic shareholding transactions, between Santam and Lireas, Compass Insurance Company became the lead underwriter for HIU.
