Bokashi Bran
Company profile
Bokashi is wheaten-bran infused with effective microorganisms. It’s used to treat food waste to keep it out of landfill where it causes the most environmental damage. Untreated food waste will putrefy and give off an unpleasant odour which attracts flies and vermin. Food waste that has been treated with Bokashi Bran will ferment and be prepared for organic composting.
- Bokashi Bran offers a solution for separating food waste at source.
- It helps reduce waste collection costs – Putrescible Waste (Dailies) can become weekly collections and be reduced by 80% in volume.
- Do the right thing for the environment.
- Greater awareness of food wastage.
- Hygiene factor – Joburg Environmental Health Department has approved the Bokashi Bran system for commercial kitchens.
- No odours from dustbins.
What can be “bokashied”?
This is the beauty of the system. Bokashi is not fussy. Cooked food, protein, dairy – anything organic. The only thing that needs to be kept out of the bokashi system is oil, liquids and food that has already gone rotten.
What can go wrong with the bokashi system?
- Not using enough bokashi so the food waste putrefies.
- Too much oxygen inside the bokashi bucket or drum. This is an anaerobic system that ferments the food waste.
- Food waste has been left for too long before treating it with bokashi.
Benefits for the commercial kitchen:
- Bins cannot be used to “smuggle” items out of the kitchen
- Recycling of glass, tin, plastic and board become easy and mess-free.
- The bokashi system contributes to sound environmental stewardship.
- It enhances the image of the organization as responsible and environmentally concerned.
