The birth of Hand Painted By Carmel happened by chance when Carmel graduated from The Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town. One of Carmel's textile designs gained the recognition of an esteemed fabric buyer who immediately bought it and put it into production.

This inspired Carmel to develop her talent and style for textiles on her own, and soon created her own range of designs, mostly for table wear use.

Carmel and Benjy created a signature product which would become the unique selling point of Hand Painted By Carmel: the coated tablecloth company. Carmel's designs, which are painted onto 100% raw bull denim cotton, are coated with Textile Shield, a specially developed coating making them completely stain and liquid resistant. These specialised tablecloths never need be laundered, but simply wiped down after use. The result was an artistically designed, customised hand painted product with complete functionability. In particular, the restaurant industry has recognised this useful, creative and cost saving product.

Over the past ten years, Benjy and Carmel have established a company which is truly "proudly South African" in every way, and continues to inspire with creativity, energy and a brand, which has positive association with all who have come to know it.

The collection consists of distinctive, vibrant and original co-ordinating designs. This mess-free range of products is ideal for inside or outside, owing to its unique easy and simple wipe-clean properties. Customised designs incorporating logos or branding, made up in required sizes, is available. Alternatively, choose from the beautiful wide range of designs. Our hospitality products include tablecloths, napkins, placemats, runner, chair cushions, pool loungers and upholstery fabric. For formal tablewear, coated/uncoated overlays and underlays is also available. A unique and efficient contract system is offered, with guarantees that include maintenance of the product that it remains in pristine condition as well as the freedom of choosing a new design every year.
